Canine Natural Diet Note Sheet



Preservatives to be avoided:
BHT
BHA
Ethoxyquin
Sodium mono floro phosphate

Allowed:
Tocopherol - Vitamin E
Vitamin C

Commercial Foods Available with no preservatives and additives: Canned food - Natures Gift, no preservatives. All their other food lines contain preservatives but the tinned dog food does not.

4 Legs - available in Coles in the meat section or animal food section. No preservatives, additives and not cooked.

Ausmeal Dog food - a new brand on the market of prepackaged dried food that only requires hot water to be added. In Vegan and Meat varieties that raw meat can be added to. Contains a good balance of vitamins and minerals. Also have a dry biscuit available with no artificial preservatives or colours. Contact Alan Bracken on 02 6359 5028.

Biscuits: Eukanuba, Purina, Supacoat

Become a label reader and watch out for those preservatives mentioned above. It is also desirable to avoid any product listing the bulk of the contents as by products (e.g. beef and/or chicken and/or pork by products). This means all the carcass leftovers after the useful meat is processed - e.g. chicken feet, lungs, heart, etc. Look for an actual meat source.

NEVER feed raw onions (can cause anaemia) and don't feed cooked onions in large quantities.

Be very cautious about feeding chocolate, this can be toxic for dogs.

As a general guide Adult dog 60% of diet raw meaty bones. Puppy 60-80% raw meaty bones.

Animal Products:
  • RAW meaty bones from chicken, lamb, beef, rabbit, pork
  • Muscle meat from chicken, lamb, beef, pork (some dogs will react to pork with bloody diarrhea, if so do not feed).
  • Organ meat - liver, kidneys, heart, brains
  • Eggs, especially the yolks
  • Cheese and cottage cheese, yoghurt, milk, butter
  • Seafood's - any fatty fish, herring, salmon, sardines, etc - not everyday for raw fish.

    Plant Products:
  • Fresh, green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, outer leaves of lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, etc. Do not feed large amounts continuously of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, beans or peas
  • Sprouts - alfalfa, mung beans, etc.
  • Corn (but not cobs, can swallow and cause severe blockages), sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, etc.
  • Root vegetables, potatoes, carrots, etc
  • Fresh and dried fruits - any of the legumes - lentils, baked beans, etc.
  • Whole grains including brown rice and oat flakes, wheatgerm, wheat bran, wholemeal bread.

    Vegetables raw, or very lightly blanched, pulped in a juicer, mincer, food processor, etc.

    Miscellaneous: Brewers yeast
    Kelp
    Molasses


    Oils: Cod liver oil, corn oil, soybean oil, wheatgerm oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil.
